How Aromatherapy Works

Posted on November 19, 2014 at 6:46 AM
Aromatherapy is a way of keeping well, naturally.  It is an ages-old therapy originating out of herbalism.  The word 'Aromatherapy' is a relatively new word for a very ancient form of treatment using essential oils which have been extracted from aromatic plants for the promotion and maintenance of physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

Essential oils possess different biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, sedative, digestive, antimicrobial, antiviral and antioxidant Extensive research into Essential Oils is currently being undertaken as an alternative to western medicine.  Antibiotics for example have been crucial to fighting infection but as antibiotic resistance increases so does the search for a replacement.

Essential oils move through the body with great ease and are more powerful than many of us think.  They are also absorbed through the soles of our feet quicker than any other part of our body.  If you want proof of this just rub some raw garlic on your feet, depending on your metabolism the smell of garlic can be on your breath as quick as 15 minutes.  Essential oils can also be inhaled.  An aromatic molecule has the potential to be the fastest modifier of behaviour, our central nervous system, and even our thought processes.  Just think how we feel when we smell a sweet, wild rose, freshly cut grass or herbs in our garden such as rosemary, thyme or lavender. Many schools for children with behavioural problems now have an in-house aromatherapist.

Essential Oils not only smell good they are a great for restoring balance, easing anxiety and boosting the immune system.   Some oils are anti-bacterial or act as a mild anti-depressant, some are uplifting whilst others bring you down or have grounding properties.

For a more effective reflexology or Facial Rejuvenation treatment I tailor make a fresh blend of Essential Oils to suit your individual needs.  I can also do this for the facial rejuvenation treatment which I usually end with a couple of minutes foot massage anyway.  The oil left over at the end of the treatment is yours to take home.
